NFTC Welcomes Mexico’s Inclusion in TPP Negotiations

June 18, 2012

Washington DC– The National Foreign Trade Council (NFTC) today welcomed the Administration’s announcement that Mexico has been invited to join the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) negotiations. The NFTC released the following statement:

“We applaud the inclusion of one of the United States’ largest and most strategic trading partners, and we congratulate the nine TPP partners for reaching a consensus to admit Mexico to the negotiations.

“The inclusion of Mexico is a major milestone toward creating a 21st century Asia-Pacific free trade area that will increase America’s competitiveness and help expand economic integration in the fast-growing market. In today’s global economy, through integrated supply chains and extremely important export markets, the United States benefits from a cohesive North American export platform. With the inclusion of Mexico, U.S. businesses, workers, farmers and ranchers will have an opportunity to take full advantage of the economic benefits of a completed TPP agreement.

“We urge the nations that are a party to the TPP negotiations to redouble their efforts to conclude a high quality 21st century agreement that could be the gold standard for future plurilateral trade pacts.

“The inclusion of Mexico in the talks will increase the likelihood of further reduction of barriers to trade and the negotiation of key issues in agriculture, IPR, government procurement and SPS, as well as new disciplines included in the TPP’s forward-looking agenda.”
