NFTC Praises USTR China Review

February 14, 2006

Washington, DC – The National Foreign Trade Council today commended Ambassador Portman and the USTR on the release of its top-to-bottom review of U.S.-China trade policy.

“This is a comprehensive review of the current state of U.S.-China trade policy. The U.S. bilateral trade relationship with China is a complex one, and as the report highlights, it is entering a new and more mature phase.  The NFTC commends Ambassador Portman and his team for issuing a report that is designed to enhance and strengthen the relationship,” stated Mary Irace, NFTC Vice President.

Irace added, “The United States and China have a tremendous stake in a mutually beneficial and growing economic partnership, and in an open, rules-based trading regime. As the report highlights, China must act more responsibly as a key stakeholder to ensure its trade obligations are implemented fully and to honor its commitments, particularly on issues such as intellectual property rights and market opening. It also has an important responsibility to fully participate in ensuring a successful outcome to the Doha Round.”

“The NFTC and its members look forward to working with Ambassador Portman to address the report’s key findings and recommendations.  We will also continue to strongly oppose initiatives which would lead to closing off opportunities to grow and strengthen U.S.-China trade relations, including protectionist measures which would harm, not improve, U.S.-China trade,” concluded Irace.

The National Foreign Trade Council (www.nftc.org) is a leading business organization advocating an open, rules-based global trading system. Founded in 1914 by a broad-based group of American companies, the NFTC now serves hundreds of member companies through its offices in Washington and New York.
