NFTC Commends House on Passage of Trade Promotion Authority

July 27, 2002

Washington DC – The National Foreign Trade Council strongly commends the House of Representatives for passing Trade Promotion Authority (TPA).

“With passage of TPA in the House, we are two steps away from a historic moment – and it couldn’t come at a more critical time,” said Bill Reinsch, President of the National Foreign Trade Council. “TPA is vital to U.S. economic recovery and stability. TPA is vital to the global economy, workers, farmers, and consumers. The Senate must act swiftly so that the President can sign into law one of this year’s most important pieces of legislation.”

With the Doha Development Agenda, FTAA and other bilateral free trade initiatives fully underway, passage of TPA will strengthen U.S. economic leadership and allow these negotiations to advance within existing deadlines and with ambitious liberalization objectives, according to Reinsch.

“With TPA in hand, America’s negotiators speak from a position of strength. With TPA, the President and Congress are united – acting in partnership on behalf of the U.S. national economic interest,” said Reinsch
