NFTC Applauds U.S.-China Commitment to Economic Cooperation

September 20, 2006

Washington DC – National Foreign Trade Council (NFTC) President Bill Reinsch issued the following statement applauding today’s announcement in Beijing outlining the framework for greater economic cooperation between the United States and China.

“The NFTC welcomes this new high-level dialogue.  Trade and economic problems between our two countries are growing, and creating an ongoing opportunity for both presidents and other senior officials to focus on them can only help.

“Since Bob Zoellick’s departure from government, the Administration has not had a senior leader focused on our economic policy with China.  This trip and this announcement suggest that Secretary Paulson is taking on that responsibility, which is a welcome development for the business community.  He not only understands the country, he clearly has good relationships with his counterparts there, which is essential if we are to make progress on the problems in the relationship.

“The U.S.-China economic relationship offers challenges and benefits to both nations.  We applaud the initiative announced today.”
