NFTC Applauds Senate Action on CAFTA

June 14, 2005

Urges Quick Passage of Agreement

WASHINGTON, DC – The National Foreign Trade Council today issued the following statement on the Senate Finance’s Committee’s mock mark-up of the Dominican Republican-Central America Free Trade Agreement (DR-CAFTA).

“Today’s mock mark-up is an important step forward in approving DR-CAFTA.  NFTC has repeatedly urged Congress to pass this legislation as soon as possible because it is key for creating commercial opportunities in the hemisphere and maintaining the United States’ leadership role on trade liberalization,” said NFTC President Bill Reinsch.

“DR-CAFTA is a high standard agreement that will eliminate trade barriers and improve trade rules, thereby increasing economic opportunities for NFTC member companies in the second largest market in the hemisphere,” added Reinsch.

“We urge both the House and the Senate to pass this important agreement without delay,” added Reinsch.

The mock mark-up allowed Senators to offer non-binding amendments to the draft implementing language of DR-CAFTA. While amendments are non-binding, they are an important part of the Congressional consultation process for the consideration of trade agreements under trade promotion authority.

The National Foreign Trade Council (www.nftc.org) is a leading business organization advocating an open, rules-based global trading system. Founded in 1914 by a broad-based group of American companies, the NFTC now serves hundreds of member companies through its offices in Washington and New York.
