NFTC Applauds Defeat of Dorgan Amendment

September 15, 2005

WASHINGTON DC – The National Foreign Trade Council applauded today’s U.S. Senate rejection of the Dorgan Amendment.  Amendment No. 1665 to H.R. 2862, the Commerce, State, Justice FY2006 Appropriations Bill, would have placed the Doha Development Agenda in peril had it passed.  The Senate defeated the measure on a 60-39 vote.

“We are grateful that the Senate had the foresight to reject the Dorgan Amendment, as it would have threatened the success of the Doha Development Agenda,” said Mary Irace, NFTC Vice President for Trade and Export Finance.  “Congress should now be focused on helping to ensure an ambitious and commercially meaningful outcome to the Doha Round, including a successful Hong Kong Ministerial meeting in December.  An successful conclusion to the negotiations will create significant new opportunities for the U.S. economy, and should be one of this nation’s top priorities.”
