Inaugural Meeting of Russia 123 Coalition

Date: 6/11/08

We are pleased to invite you to join us at 2:00 on Wednesday, June 11 at the NFTC, 1625 K Street, NW, Suite 200, at the inaugural meeting of a coalition to support President Bush’s May 5 “123 Agreement” to expand peaceful nuclear cooperation with Russia.  The agreement will go into effect unless Congress passes a resolution of disapproval within 90 legislative days of the President’s submission, which is likely to be reached near the time of Congress’ adjournment this fall. The agreement has strong bipartisan opposition in the House and the Senate grounded in concern that nonproliferation funding for Russia will indirectly assist Iran’s nuclear program.  We disagree with that view and also believe the agreement will enhance US-Russian cooperation in developing new technologies and create a framework for U.S. commercial sales of civil nuclear commodities to Russia. The Coalition’s purpose is to educate Members of Congress on the purpose and significance of the agreement and to dissuade them from supporting legislative efforts to block it from going into effect.

Please let us know if you are able to attend by e-mail to Dan O’Flaherty at doflaherty@nftc.org.
